The mission of the WCJC Adult Education and Literacy program is to provide English as a Second Language (ESL) course, High School Equivalency (HSE) preparation course, Transitions to College, Integrated Education and Training courses to adults who reside within Wharton County Junior College service areas and assigned service areas by the grant recipient, Houston Galveston Area Council (HGAC). The AEL program integrates active learning skills and informative literacy components into the teaching/learning process taking place in the classroom. Through the provision of professional staff, print and non-print materials, digital technologies, physical facilities, and supportive equipment, the WCJC AEL program provides the delivery of instructional services at no cost to the students. In keeping with the role and scope of the institution, the WCJC AEL program also offers its services and its facilities for community use.

WCJC AEL conducts Adult Basic Education and Adult Secondary classes throughout Austin, Colorado, Fort Bend, Matagorda, Waller and Wharton counties. Our program delivers instruction for HSE preparation; improves basic academic skills such as reading, math, and writing; and develops speaking and writing communication skills for ESL students. WCJC Adult Education and Literacy offers courses during the day and evenings to accommodate the busy schedules of our students. All instructional services, including books, are provided free of charge.
Do you need a High School Equivalency Diploma?
WCJC Adult Education and Literacy offers HSE (GED) instruction within a supportive classroom setting for our students. Our highly-qualified teaching staff prepares students to pass their HSE test and provides encouragement for students who wish to continue their education. Career and financial counseling services are made available during class time.
Do you need to improve your English skills?
WCJC Adult Education and Literacy ESL classes are designed for non-English learners and include instruction on proper pronunciation and use of English language structures. Classes will help ESL students to become more effective in conversation by focusing on strategies for initiating conversation, using functional language, and improving listening skills. Highly-qualified faculty will target grammar trouble spots in speaking, writing, and common pronunciation errors.
