Basic Peace Officer Training
(Level I Certificate)


WCJC operates a licensed police academy certified by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).  Students who successfully complete the required training are eligible for the state licensing examination to become a licensed peace officer in the State of Texas.

The police academy offers both day and evening classes.  Day classes are held at the Wharton campus: 8:00am-5:00pm Monday through Friday.  Evening classes are held at the Richmond campus: 6:00pm-10:00pm Monday through Friday.  Students must register for all courses as a semester block; courses may not be taken individually. 

A class average of 80% and a minimum grade of 80 on exams are required to successfully complete the Basic Peace Officer Certificate course.  

Applicants must apply and meet all admission requirements to Wharton County Junior College.

TESTING:  College Entrance Testing (TSI) is NOT required for entrance into the program.

NOTE:  Interested individuals must please submit a program application to the Police Academy office to be considered for the requested class. Student registration packets are prepared for each individual academy and will be issued for the requested class upon receipt of the program application.
